A Spooktacular Halloween Celebration on Hilton Head Island

Vicki Shivers - Thursday, October 20, 2011

Hilton Head will be filled with ghosts, witches and goblins this month as we celebrate Halloween on the Island. There are plenty of Halloween happenings for your little goblins as well as grown up ghouls, so get all dressed up in your favorite spooky or funny costume and enjoy!

A time of celebration and superstition, Halloween is said to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, where people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts.  The tradition of dressing in costumes and trick-or-treating for Halloween dates back hundreds of years ago when food supplies were low and the shorter days of winter were worrisome for those afraid of the dark. On Halloween, people believed that ghosts came back and they would encounter these scary entities if they left their homes. To avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they went out after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter.

Halloween Events on Hilton Head for your little princesses and super heroes include the Sea Pines Scarecrow Forest Walkabout, the Pumpkin Patch Festival, the Zombie Mile Run and Celebration, the Salty Dog Haunted BBQ and Costume Contest, The Haunted Trail and Enchanted Forest at Honey Horn Plantation, Trick-or-Treating at the Tanger Outlets and more!

Grown up ghouls will find various celebrations, costume contests and Halloween events at various bars and restaurants around the Island. Area celebrations include The Dead Celebrity Ball at the Wild Wing Café, The Hilton Head Island Shag Club Halloween Bash, The Haunted Trail, and more!
