Vicki Shivers - Friday, February 20, 2015

The Coastal Discovery Museum was established in 1985 with a mission to teach the public about the natural history and cultural heritage of Hilton Head Island and the surrounding South Carolina Lowcountry.

The Coastal Discovery Museum has two locations: The Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn Plantation and The Coastal Discovery Museum on Highway 278. Each location offers a variety of activities and unique opportunities that make it a fun way to learn about our area for the whole family.

The Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn opened to the public in 2007 and is located on a 68 acre historic property that has a history dating back 300 years. This visitor friendly museum, the last significant parcel of open space on Hilton Head Island, consists of some of the oldest building on the Island, salt marshes, open fields, centuries old live oak trees and the State's largest Southern Red Cedar tree dated all the way back to 1595! Visitors have the opportunity to learn about the history and ecology of the area by scheduling one of the Museum’s many tours such as beach walks, dolphin cruises, plantation tours and trolley tours.

The Coastal Discovery Museum’s 2nd location, located at Mile Marker #1 just over the bridge to the Island, is shared with the Hilton Head Island Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center. This location includes a small exhibition gallery, children's educational games/ and toys and a gift shop featuring South Carolina products, books, crafts and artwork.

The Museum is a great way to become familiar with the Hilton Head’s unique history and ecology and is perfect for a visit, no matter what the season or weather. The diverse activities will surely please anyone in your family or group with its exhibits, activity centers in the Sea Island Classroom, the History Time-line Exhibit, Museum Store and 11 different tours and cruises around the island!

Open year round, Monday through Saturday 9:00am - 4:30pm and Sunday 11:00am - 3:00pm. Learn more about the Coastal Discovery Museum here.
