Join the Labor Day Weekend Celebration on Hilton Head Island

Vicki Shivers - Thursday, July 28, 2011

Although Labor Day is often a reminder that the last day of summer is fast approaching in some parts of the U.S., we on Hilton Head Island like to think of it as the end of one great vacation season and the beginning of yet another. If you haven’t had the chance to visit Hilton Head this summer, the Labor Day holiday weekend is the perfect opportunity!

Labor Day, September 5th of this year, is celebrated on the first Monday in September which always allows for a long weekend celebration. The first Labor Day in the United States was observed on August 26, 1878, in Boston, by the Central Labor Union of New York, the nation's first integrated major trade union. It became a federal holiday in 1894, when President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with the labor movement as a top political priority. The first Labor Day celebration consisted of a street parade followed by a festival for the workers and their families. This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations and is how we got the traditional ways we still celebrate the holiday today.

Labor Day is often regarded as a day of rest and parties and we typically celebrate with picnics, barbecues, fireworks, water sports, and days at the beach! Labor Day weekend is the perfect opportunity for families with school-age children to take advantage of the last chance to travel on vacation before the summer break is over…and what better place to visit for a family vacation then Hilton Head Island!?
