Lawton Stables Offers Horseback Riding, a Petting Zoo, and More Family Fun on Hilton Head Island

Vicki Shivers - Thursday, March 19, 2015

Hilton Head Island has endless opportunities for the entire family to enjoy, including a full service Equestrian Center that offers horseback riding, carriage rides and even an animal farm to visit!

Lawton Stables was created in 1867 by two N.Y. teachers who relocated to Hilton Head to teach various skills to the freed slaves so that they could lead productive and independent lives. The original home of the plantation house and stables were actually located in Harbour Town. Unfortunately, nothing of the old house remains, but the teacher’s spirit of adventure is still displayed and lives on today at Lawton Stables.

Lawton Stables moved to its current location in 1969, to make room for the newly planned Harbour Town Golf Course and now world famous lighthouse and a complete renovation program began in January 2008 to enhance the stables.

Lawton Stables gives you the chance to ride horses through over 600 lush tropical acres of the Sea Pines Forest Preserve on one hour long escorted Western style trail rides to get up close with the true nature of the Lowcountry. The Stables offers pony rides for the younger kids and an animal farm with a collection of small animals that everyone will enjoy meeting.

You may also be surprised to hear that Lawton Stables is home to Harley, a retired Budweiser Clydesdale Horse. During certain times of the year carriage rides are offered through the Forest Preserve in a carriage pulled by the famous Clydesdales. Here’s the info if you want to visit:
